Think Signs case study

Bowl Central, illuminated

A 6m x 6.5m flex-face lightbox, designed, fabricated and installed at height for Rocare Construction in Fareham.

Large-format illuminated signage is often the difference between a building that is merely occupied and a building that feels commercially alive. For Bowl Central in Fareham, Rocare Construction required a signage solution that would match the scale of the venue, support the brand visually and create a strong landmark presence from the outside.

The answer was a substantial illuminated sign: a 6 metre by 6.5 metre flex-face lightbox, engineered in sections, finished with a black powder-coated aluminium framework and installed at height by the Think Signs team. At this scale, the project was not simply a matter of making a larger version of a standard sign. It required careful coordination between design, fabrication, print production, transport planning and high-level installation.

The completed lightbox provides a crisp, highly visible branded surface across a major external elevation. It is a practical example of how properly specified shop front signage and venue signage can support recognition, visibility and confidence before a customer even steps inside.

"This is exactly the kind of project that shows what Think Signs is about. The finished Bowl Central lightbox looks fantastic, but the work behind it is just as important: planning, fabrication, print, access and installation all had to come together properly. We are incredibly proud of what the team has produced." Jeff Todd, Managing Director, Think Signs

Project brief: high-impact signage at serious scale

Rocare Construction needed a signage partner capable of delivering a large illuminated brand feature for Bowl Central, with the quality of finish expected on a modern commercial leisure project. The sign needed to be visually confident, professionally manufactured and practical to install on site.

The dimensions alone made this an involved project. A 6m x 6.5m lightbox creates a finished sign face of around 39 square metres, which is a very different proposition to a conventional fascia or smaller wall-mounted sign. The structure had to be designed so it could be fabricated accurately, transported sensibly, lifted safely and assembled cleanly at height.

For Think Signs, the main priorities were clear:

  • Create a bold illuminated branding solution that suited Bowl Central's external frontage.
  • Powder coat the aluminium framework in black to complement the visual identity.
  • Design the framework in manageable sections without compromising the finished appearance.
  • Produce a large flex-face print with accurate alignment across the installed face.
  • Install the sign safely at height using suitable access equipment and experienced installers.

That combination of scale, illumination, print alignment and site access made the project a strong showcase for Think Signs' end-to-end capability. The team was not only producing a sign; it was engineering a complete external brand feature.

Design and fabrication: sectional engineering for a 6m x 6.5m lightbox

One of the most important decisions on the project was how to manufacture the lightbox so that it would be accurate, durable and installable. At 6m x 6.5m, a single-piece approach would not have been practical. Handling, transport and access all pointed towards a sectional build.

Think Signs designed and fabricated the aluminium framework in sections, allowing the structure to be moved, handled and assembled safely on site. This approach reduced unnecessary risk while still allowing the finished sign to read as one coherent illuminated feature once installed.

The aluminium framework was powder coated black to closely match the brand direction and create a clean, professional edge to the sign. Powder coating was selected because it provides a durable and consistent finish, particularly important for external signage that needs to retain its appearance in changing weather and lighting conditions. The black frame also gives the illuminated face a defined architectural border, making the sign feel integrated rather than simply applied.

Sectional fabrication demands accuracy. Each component has to meet the next cleanly, mounting positions must be considered ahead of installation and the final assembly has to maintain the correct geometry across a very large surface. Small errors can become visually obvious when they are repeated across a sign of this size. That is where production planning matters as much as the visible finish.

Flex-face print: creating a clean illuminated surface

For a sign of this scale, flex-face is a highly effective illuminated signage solution. It allows large-format printed graphics to be tensioned across the face of a lightbox, creating a smooth branded surface that works in daylight and after dark. For Bowl Central, the flex-face print needed to deliver strong colour, clear brand recognition and a consistent finish across a substantial frontage.

As with the framework, the dimensions meant the printed face had to be planned with care. The sign face was produced and installed in sections, with particular attention given to alignment. On large-format illuminated work, there is little room for casual adjustment. The finished result depends on accurate measurement, controlled print production, careful handling and an installation process that respects the position of every section.

The sectional approach also required the installation team to think progressively. Rather than trying to handle the entire face as one unwieldy component, the team could work through the lightbox in a controlled sequence. This helped protect the print, maintain alignment and support a cleaner finish across the completed sign.

Installation: working safely at height

The installation environment added another layer of complexity. The Bowl Central lightbox was installed at height, requiring safe access, careful handling and clear coordination between the installers and ground-level operations. Think Signs used a scissor lift to provide stable access to the elevated sections of the sign.

Large signage becomes more challenging as soon as it leaves the workshop. Materials that are manageable on a production floor behave differently outdoors, particularly when working at height. The installation team had to account for the size of each section, the movement of the lift, the position of the building frontage and the need to assemble the structure accurately while maintaining a safe working area.

This is where experienced installers make a visible difference. A successful high-level sign installation depends on confidence, communication and sequencing. The team installed the framework and face progressively, building the finished sign in a controlled way instead of attempting to lift or fix a complete 6m x 6.5m unit. That method allowed the installation to stay practical, safe and precise.

Projects like this also underline why large-format signage should be considered early in a construction or refurbishment programme. Access, fixing points, power, timings, neighbouring trades and weather windows can all affect the final outcome. By planning the practical details from the outset, Think Signs was able to support a smoother route from design proof to installed lightbox.

"Rocare Construction and Bowl Central have been great to work with. Projects of this size need trust and good communication from everyone involved, and this one had that. It is a brilliant finished result for the venue and a credit to the people on both sides who helped make it happen." Jeff Todd, Managing Director, Think Signs

How the project came together

Site and design review

The team reviewed the frontage, design proof and project requirements to confirm the scale, visual treatment and practical installation approach.

Sectional framework fabrication

The aluminium lightbox framework was manufactured in sections, then powder coated black for a durable finish that suited the Bowl Central brand.

Large-format flex-face production

The illuminated face was printed as a large-format flex-face solution, with section alignment planned carefully to create a clean finished appearance.

High-level installation

The installation team used a scissor lift to fit the framework and flex-face sections progressively, managing the scale safely and accurately on site.

Why this type of signage works for leisure and commercial venues

For leisure destinations, hospitality venues, retail parks and commercial units, external signage has to work hard. It must be legible, visible and memorable, but it also has to look credible on the building. A large illuminated lightbox can achieve that balance when it is properly engineered.

The Bowl Central project demonstrates several advantages of this approach. The illuminated face gives the brand visibility across different times of day. The scale helps the venue stand out from its surroundings. The black powder-coated frame provides a neat, durable finish. The flex-face print gives the design a clean and consistent surface across the frontage.

For businesses considering a similar project, the most important lesson is that large-format signage should be treated as a technical package, not just a graphic. The design has to work visually, but the manufacturing and installation method must also be right. A successful result depends on decisions about materials, framing, illumination, access, fixings and sequence.

Think Signs regularly supports clients with a wide range of commercial signage requirements, including illuminated signage, 3D lettering, shop front signs, wayfinding signage and broader external branding schemes. The Bowl Central lightbox is a strong example of those capabilities being brought together for one high-impact installation.

The result: bold, engineered and professionally installed

From the black powder-coated aluminium framework to the sectional flex-face print and high-level installation, every element of the Bowl Central lightbox was considered around the scale and requirements of the project.

The finished sign gives the venue a confident illuminated brand presence and demonstrates what can be achieved when large-format signage is designed, manufactured and installed as a complete technical process. For Rocare Construction and Bowl Central, the result is a prominent external feature that supports the venue's identity and improves the visual impact of the building.

For Think Signs, it is also a clear example of the value of in-house experience. Large signs do not succeed because of size alone. They succeed when design, materials, print, fabrication and installation are handled with the same level of care.

FAQs about large illuminated lightbox signs

What is a flex-face illuminated lightbox?

A flex-face illuminated lightbox is a sign system where a printed flexible face is tensioned across an illuminated frame. It is often used for large external signs because it can create a clean, bright and consistent branded surface across substantial dimensions.

Why are large lightbox signs manufactured in sections?

Very large signs can be difficult or unsafe to transport, lift and install as one complete unit. Sectional fabrication allows the framework and printed face to be handled more practically while still creating a single coherent sign once assembled.

Can Think Signs install illuminated signage at height?

Yes. Think Signs can plan and deliver high-level signage installations using appropriate access equipment and experienced installers. The correct method depends on the building, fixing points, sign size, site access and wider project conditions.

Is illuminated signage suitable for leisure venues and commercial buildings?
