Creative Collaboration at Royal Bournemouth Hospital

Think Signs is proud to have recently completed the production and installation of large scale mural panels at Royal Bournemouth Hospital, supporting a creative collaboration between University Hospitals Dorset NHS Trust and Arts University Bournemouth.

The project forms part of the Trust’s £500 million transformation programme and saw two impressive 9 metre murals installed within the new BEACH building. These artworks play an important role in shaping the interior environment, enhancing wellbeing, connection, and sense of place for patients, visitors, and staff.

The murals, titled Emerging Kingfisher and Dorset Diorama, were designed by Arts University Bournemouth interior architecture and design students Emily Bishop, Yulia Klajnscek, Rhea Hackwell, and Olivia Greatrex, under the creative direction of AUB graduate Lenya Hulford Greig. Think Signs worked closely with the project team to translate these creative concepts into high quality, durable mural panels suitable for a busy healthcare environment.

Artwork Inspired by Place and Nature

The Emerging Kingfisher mural takes inspiration from the wildlife around the hospital lake, depicting a kingfisher rising from the water against a warm sunset. Kingfishers are often associated with luck, beauty, and grace, making the artwork particularly fitting for a hospital setting.

The second mural, Dorset Diorama, focuses on local landscapes and landmarks, helping patients and visitors feel connected to the surrounding area while spending time within the hospital.

The Value of Creative Partnerships With Think Signs

Laura Joy, Arts Manager at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Trust, highlighted the importance of the collaboration, noting that creative partnerships between education and healthcare can enrich public spaces while giving emerging artists the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to their local community.

It is hoped that the project will continue as an annual initiative, partnering with local artists and education providers to further enhance the hospital environment.

Think Signs is delighted to have played a role in bringing these artworks to life. Projects like this demonstrate how signage and environmental graphics can go beyond wayfinding and branding to positively influence how people experience a space, particularly within healthcare settings.

The project has also been featured by BBC South, helping to showcase the impact of creative partnerships within public environments. You can read the full article here: Art students design murals for new Bournemouth hospital building.

Looking Ahead

Projects like the Royal Bournemouth Hospital murals highlight the growing role of environmental graphics in shaping positive, human centred spaces. As hospitals, universities, and public buildings continue to evolve, there is increasing recognition that thoughtful visual design can support wellbeing, reduce anxiety, and create stronger connections to place.

Think Signs is committed to supporting this approach by working collaboratively with designers, artists, architects, and estates teams to deliver signage and large format graphics that balance creativity with durability, compliance, and long term performance. From concept through to manufacture and installation, our focus is on ensuring each project enhances the environment it serves.

We look forward to continuing our work within healthcare and education settings, helping to bring ambitious creative visions to life at scale. By partnering with local talent and trusted institutions, we aim to contribute to spaces that feel welcoming, inspiring, and rooted in the communities they support.
